Perennial herb 20–80 cm tall. The stem is erect. The entire plant is covered with short hairs. The leaves are wavy-serrated, blunt at the top. Flowers on long peduncles, drooping, collected in a tassel-like panicle. The corolla is blue or lilac.

It grows along ravines and streams, limestone and steppe slopes as part of tree-shrub thickets. Parts of the plant contain alkaloids (betaine and choline), flavonoids, anthocyanins
