1. European robin – Erithacus rubecula
The European robin is a small forest bird with a body length of 12-14 cm and a weight of 12-18 g. The adult plumage of the upper body is olive-green, the bottom of the body is white, there is a bright orange-red spot on the chest and abdomen. The European robin has a short, rounded body, loose plumage and characteristic singing.
The European robin is common in Europe, Asia and Africa. In Ukraine, it nests throughout the territory, except for the Crimea.
The European robin is a sedentary bird. It lives in deciduous and mixed forests, parks and gardens. The European robin nests on the ground, under bushes or in tree hollows. Its nest is made of grass, moss and lichens. There are 5-6 eggs in the European robin's clutch. The eggs are incubated by the female and the male in turn. Chicks hatch after 12-14 days. After hatching, the chicks grow quickly and begin to fly after a few weeks.
The European robin feeds on insects, their larvae, spiders, berries and seeds. The European robin often catches insects on the fly.
The European robin is a fairly common species and is not listed in the Red Book of Ukraine.
